Verizon Recalls 2.5 Million Mobile Hotspots
American telecommunications company, Verizon, recalls 2.5 million mobile hotspot units due to reports of possible fire and burn injuries.
Verizon and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued the recall for their mobile hotspot in April 2021.
The particular unit being recalled is the Ellipsis Jetpack mobile hotspot. It is estimated that around 2.5 million units are affected by the recall.
The company issued the recall after receiving several reports about the device.
In total, the company has already received 15 reports of mobile hotspot overheating.
Six of those reports resulted in fires, where the customer’s floor or bed was damaged. Meanwhile, two reports involved burn injuries caused by the product.
No lawsuits have been filed against the company yet related to the issue.
Mobile Hotspot Recall Process
During the coronavirus pandemic, mobile hotspot sales have increased due to the increased demand to access the internet when working from home or homeschooling.
The Verizon Ellipsis Jetpack mobile hotspots were sold at the company’s stores, websites, and other stores. They were distributed across schools to support remote learning.
Owners of the said device are advised to immediately turn it off and unplug from any power source to avoid a potential fire.
Users are also recommended to store the device on a well-ventilated surface, away from any combustible material. Children are advised to be kept away from the device.
If device owners need to access the internet, they are advised to download the over-the-air safety software update before using the mobile hotspot device.
Verizon advises customers to return the recalled device immediately. Upon return, the company will give the user a free replacement.
The company has already informed schools where the product has been distributed.
Schools were notified to notify affected students to mail back the faulty device to the company.
They will also receive the replacement mobile hotspot via mail. Parents of affected students should coordinate with the schools about the recall procedures.
Customers who have bought the mobile hotspot can contact the hotline, 855-205-2627, to request the replacement device.
