J.M. Smucker Meow Mix Cat Food Recall Over Salmonella Effect

The Cat Food Recall

In April 2021, J.M. Sucker Co, also known as Smucker & Smucker’s, has issued a recall of their cat food product due to the possibility of salmonella contamination.

The recall covers two lots of Meow Mix Cat Food, the Original Choice Dry variant. The recalled cat food is sold in 30lb bags. 

Other variants of the Meow Mix line are not affected by the recall.

Smucker & Smucker’s stated that they have not yet received reports of illness or pet deaths due to the recalled product. They add that the recall was issued to protect customers from possible damages.

The company is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to process the recall. They have not yet been charged with a class action lawsuit related to the issue.

The Recall Process

The recall only covers the following products under the Meow Mix line manufactured by J.M. Smucker Company:

  • Original Choice Dry Cat Food
    • The product should be sold in 30lb bags
    • The Lot Code is 1081804
    • The UPC Code is 2927452099
    • The Use By Date is 9/14/2022

The company advises consumers who have bought the covered products to check the information from the packaging’s bottom and back. They add that customers should stop using the product and dispose of it if covered by the recall.

Salmonella Effects

According to the recall, salmonella can affect both pets and humans when in contracted.

Individuals who are affected by salmonella can experience bloody diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramping. Severe effects of the bacteria include urinary tract infection, arthritis, eye irritation, and muscle pain.

Humans who experience any of the symptoms should consult with healthcare providers. Meanwhile, pets who consume the product can experience fever, diarrhea, decreased appetite, excessive salivation.

If pets have accidentally consumed the covered products and show any of the symptoms, they should immediately be brought to veterinarians to be checked.

Some infected animals may also not show symptoms. However, this is equally dangerous since the infection can spread out to other animals and humans.
