Freshpet Small Dog Food Recall 2021 – Possible Salmonella Contamination…

Freshpet Food for Small Dog Is Being Recalled Due to Salmonella Concerns

In several states, a variety of Freshpet food meant for small dogs has been recalled due to the possibility of salmonella infection.

The Recall

The manufacturer recalled a batch of Freshpet Select Small Dog Bite-Size Beef & Egg Recipe Dog Food on Sunday. The recalled dog food is packed in 1 lb containers with an expiration date of October 30, 2021.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the product was offered at supermarkets in:

  • Florida
  • South Carolina
  • Georgia
  • At selected Target locations in Arizona and Southern California.

If pet owners have products that match the following description, they should immediately discontinue feeding their pets with the affected batch and discard the food, the recall letter states.

Risk of Salmonella

Salmonella poses a risk to pets and their owners who touch tainted dog food. Therefore, the FDA suggests washing the hands thoroughly after handling pet food or any surfaces that have been in contact with the product.

Salmonella poisoning symptoms in humans include the following:

  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Fever
  • Abdominal Cramps
  • Diarrhea or Bloody Diarrhea

The FDA warns that, at times, severe complications may arise, including:

  • Muscle Pain
  • Eye Irritation
  • Urinary Tract Symptoms
  • Arthritis
  • Arterial Infections
  • Endocarditis

Furthermore, the FDA notes that while animals exposed to salmonella may barely display symptoms, they can transmit the infection to other animals or humans. Therefore, after eating the recalled dog food, dogs that have been lethargic or developed bloody diarrhea, fever, or vomiting should be rushed to a veterinarian.

According to Freshpet, they intended to discard all recalled dog food, but some shipments were “inadvertently shipped” to stores between June 7 and June 10 this year.

Furthermore, no illnesses were reported as a result of the recalled dog food.
