Dole Blueberries Recall Over Microscopic Parasite Contamination
On June 24th, Dole issued a recall for its fresh blueberries due to Cyclospora contamination.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) claimed in a statement that Dole Diversified North America, Inc. is closely collaborating with regulatory officials.
Cyclospora cayetanensis is a single-celled parasite. It cannot be detected without a microscope and can cause cyclosporiasis, an intestinal infection. According to the FDA, a person may get an infection by consuming tainted food or water. Common symptoms include:
- Severe abdominal pain
- Fatigue, and
- Body aches
The FDA added that antibiotics are used to treat the infection, and most people respond immediately to the medication. Furthermore, the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) states that individuals with a healthy immune system will easily recover from the parasite infection.
Dole Blueberries Recall 2021
At this point, the recall has been issued in 2 Canadian provinces and only 4 states:
- New York, and
Dole only recalls blueberries packed between May 28th and June 9th with specific UPC and lot codes as of the moment. The company advised customers to inspect the products in their homes and discard any that matches the recall’s production description.
The affected batches are identified by the following codes printed in black ink on the clamshell container:
- 6 oz: 07143001150 8
- 18 oz: 0 71430 01154 6
- 24 oz: 071430011155 3
- Pint: 0 71430 01151 5
However, the company stated that no illnesses had been reported in connection with the recall.
This is not the first occasion Dole Food Company, Inc. has encountered blueberry issues.
