Dole Blueberries Recall Over Microscopic Parasite Contamination

On June 24th, Dole issued a recall for its fresh blueberries due to Cyclospora contamination.

Cyclospora Cayetanensis

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) claimed in a statement that Dole Diversified North America, Inc. is closely collaborating with regulatory officials.

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a single-celled parasite. It cannot be detected without a microscope and can cause cyclosporiasis, an intestinal infection. According to the FDA, a person may get an infection by consuming tainted food or water. Common symptoms include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • Fatigue, and
  • Body aches

The FDA added that antibiotics are used to treat the infection, and most people respond immediately to the medication. Furthermore, the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) states that individuals with a healthy immune system will easily recover from the parasite infection.
