SmarterSelect In Trouble
According to recent online reports, SmarterSelect has experienced a data breach hacking that affected 1.2 million individuals that use its platform. The company is a known solutions and software and tools provider for scholarship applications management.
It is believed that countless scholarship applicants’ personal information has been exposed. Types of data said to be affected by the data breach range from names, phone and contact details, Social Security information, school records and transcripts, and many more.
The aforementioned kinds of data were collected and processed by SmarterSelect from scholarship claimants that used its system between November 2020 to the 21st of September 2021.
More Information About The SmarterSelect Data Breach Incident
UpGuard, a cybersecurity firm, has first detected the SS data breach incident during the first half of the month of September 2021. It allegedly stumbled upon publicly available cloud storage containing thousands of files with highly sensitive information like scholarship applicants’ photo identification, letters of recommendation, and the like.
It is said that SmarterSelect has been informed of this twice during the month of September by UpGuard. Nevertheless, the company waited a handful of days before finally setting the found information’s security status to private.
