Dog Treat Recall Expanded To Include Humans

A salmonella outbreak linked to pig ear dog treats is expanding to humans who have now been sickened. The CDC says 93 people in 27 states, contracted salmonella infections from handling the treats, then eating or preparing food without washing their hands.

Twenty of the ill people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

According to the CDC, the states affected include: Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin.

People can become sick just by petting their infected dogs. Salmonella also spreads when dogs track feces through homes with paws.
