Pay Increase Affects Eleven Percent of Walmart’s Employees
Walmart announced that it is raising the wages of 165,000 hourly employees employed in its branches across the U.S.
Walmart chief operating officer Dacona Smith stated that the company is implementing a “team-based” staffing model, and they will be creating new hourly and salaried leadership roles at its supercenters.
Pay for these new positions will range from $18 to $21 an hour, with some getting up to $30 an hour. This pay boost will affect tens of thousands of Walmart’s hourly workers.
COO Smith went on to say that Walmart is “investing in new roles and skills training to give us the flexibility to serve customers anytime and anywhere. In turn, associates will have more room for career and pay growth.”
About the Pay Increase For Walmart Employees
Based on the announcement, bakery and deli employees will find their pay increased to $15 an hour from the current $11 an hour. Auto care center employees will also see a $1 per hour increase added to their pay. These pay changes will be reflected in the workers’ pay come October.
The company said in its announcement that they “are re-investing in several ways to provide associates with higher and more consistent base pay.”
Walmart also commended their employees by saying that their “associates have done an incredible job serving customers and making a difference in their communities, especially in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. They’ve gone above and beyond to make sure customers have access to the items they need while making health and safety a top priority.”
