Bayer, maker of glyphosate-based weed killer Roundup, has asked a California appeals court to overturn an $86 million verdict in a case where the product was found to have caused a couple’s cancer.
The request was filed in the California First District Court of Appeal in San Francisco last week. Th company says the verdict in this case “could not be reconciled” within the context of the law or science.
The verdict originally awarded more than $2 billion to Alberta and Alva Pilliod. A trial judge later reduced the damages to $86 million.
The company faces more than 42,700 plaintiffs in the United States who claim Roundup and glyphosate caused their health issues.
