Green Giant Packaged Veggies Recalled for Listeria Risk

Packages of butternut squash, cauliflower, zucchini and veggie bowls by familiar brands Green Giant, Trader Joe’s and Signature Farms are under voluntary recall. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recall is due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The Problem

Manufacturer Growers Express issued the voluntary recall earlier this week. The packages were produced in a Biddeford, Maine factory. The products were sold in supermarkets across the country, primarily in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Maine. Stop & Shop, Trader Joe’s, Food Lion, and Big Y are among those included on the FDA list of the stores affected.

About the Affected Products

Contaminated products are stamped with Best if Used By dates between June 26-29, 2019. Green Giant frozen and canned vegetables have not been recalled.

Tom Byrne, President of Growers Express, released the following statement: “The safety of our consumers is our first priority. We self-reported the need for this recall to the US Food and Drug Administration and stopped production immediately after being notified of a single positive sample by the Massachusetts Department of Health.”

The Fix

If consumers have the products, they are to dispose of them or return them to the store of origin for a refund. The company is sanitizing its factory and equipment. Additional safety tests are underway. There are no other Growers Express products involved other than those included in the FDA list.
