Best of Summer: Sunscreens You Need Before Hitting the Beach

We know we need to protect our skin from the harmful rays of the sun. It is critical for our health to avoid cancers and skin damage. The best way to do this is with sunscreen.

But, do you know what sunscreen is best for you and your family? Consumer Reports compared some 82 products to help you out.

In testing done by CR, sunscreens were applied to the skin and subjects were to soak in a tub for 40 or 80 minutes, depending on the product’s water-resistance claims on their packaging. They were then placed under simulated sunlight. They were then evaluated for redness the next day.

These are their top two and believe it or not, they are store brands!:

  • Equate Ultra Protection Lotion SPF 50 at Walmart
  • Trader Joe’s Spray SPF 50-plus

The Food and Drug Administration has been concerned about products containing oxybenzone, there’s evidence it’s absorbed through the skin of animals and interfere with the function of hormones like estrogen. Still there’s not evidence to support its danger to humans, but the American Academy of Pediatrics says parents should consider using an oxybenzone-free sunscreen on children.

Chemical-free sunscreens made from minerals and other natural products can be made at home with tips you can find on Pinterest.

Consumer Reports says parents should not spray sunscreen on children, they may inhale the vapors. Instead, CR suggests parents spray it into their hands and then rub it on their skin.
