Barnes & Noble Data Breach; Consumer Data Compromised

Data Breach Involved Barnes & Noble Corporate Systems and Nook Platform

A cybersecurity attack on Barnes & Noble last October 10 that led to “unauthorized and unlawful access to certain Barnes & Noble corporate systems” which may have exposed customers’ personal information.

The company sent emails to its customers informing them of the data breach and explaining that the potential exposed information includes customer email addresses, billing and shipping addresses, telephone numbers, and transaction histories.

The email states that “the systems impacted … did contain your email address and, if supplied by you, your billing and shipping address and telephone number.”

The company went further to say that they “currently have no evidence of the exposure of any of this data, but we cannot at this stage rule out the possibility.”

No financial data have been exposed, however, Barnes & Noble assures as payment information is stored “encrypted and tokenized” for security purposes.

The company warns consumers to be vigilant as the leaked email addresses could be used to carry out phishing campaigns.

Breach on the Nook Platform

The breach also affected the company’s eBook and e-Reader platform, Nook Digital. Nook owners have not been able to download books to their devices since Sunday.

Barnes & Noble assured consumers that they are investigating the cause of this issue and are working to restore service which is taking longer than expected.

The bookstore giant explained that they “are continuing to experience a systems failure that is interrupting NOOK content. We are working urgently to get all NOOK services back to full operation. Unfortunately, it has taken longer than anticipated, and we sincerely apologize for this inconvenience and frustration.”

Customers are being assured that payment details are not compromised, and they will be informed once service is restored, stating in a Tweet that the company “expects NOOK to be fully operational shortly and will post an update once systems are restored.”
