Halloween’s signature treat is candy. Pie is the sweet of choice at Thanksgiving. And in December, one of the most iconic of all the delectable holiday treats are the Christmas Cookies.

This time of year, Christmas cookies seem to be everywhere—office parties, cookie swaps, and neighbors’ homes. At the supermarket, you’ll encounter special offerings or holiday versions of the year-round products from store brands and baked-goods companies.

All those holiday cookies can be tempting, and you’ll need to stick to good portion control if you don’t want to pack on the pounds. “Trouble is, most of us don’t stick to just one or two cookies,” says Amy Keating, R.D., a Consumer Reports dietitian. “But being aware of just how many calories you’re taking in can help keep a holiday indulgence from turning into a binge.”
