Medicines Labeled as Non-Drowsy Can Make You Drowsy
An ongoing investigation is focused on potential claims that manufacturers of “Non-Drowsy” cold-relief, flu, and cough products mislabel medicines as “Non Drowsy” despite containing one or more ingredients known to cause drowsiness.
Dextromethorphan hydrobromide (HBR), for example, is known to cause drowsiness. Certain cold-product lines labeled as “Non-Drowsy” still contain these ingredients.
A sampling of the products included in the investigation include Bayer’s Alka-Seltzer day cold and flu and Amazon’s Basic Care daytime medicines:
Alka-Seltzer Plus Severe Cold Powerfast Fizz, Alka-Seltzer Plus Maximum Strength Day Cold and Flu Powermax Gels, Alka-Seltzer Plus Maximum Strength Day Cold and Flu, Alka-Seltzer Plus Maximum Strength Day and Night Cold and Flu, Alka-Seltzer Plus Cold Day and Night, Alka-Seltzer Plus Maximum Strength Day and Night Cold and Flu Powermax Gels, Alka-Seltzer Plus Severe Cold Powerfast Fizz Day and Night, Alka-Seltzer Plus Cough, Mucus and Congestion Day and Night Powermax, Alka-Seltzer Plus Maximum Strength Day and Night Cold and Flu Powermax Gels, and Alka-Seltzer Plus Maximum Strength Cough, Mucus and Congestion Day and Night
