Gyms Refuse Membership Charge Refunds In the face of COVID-19
The Wall Street Journal reported that an estimated loss of $700 million per week was seen by the fitness industry during the height of COVID-19 shutdowns.
Several gyms and fitness centers had to voluntarily close down due to the quarantine and safety measures brought about by the coronavirus pandemic.
Some gyms, however, have reportedly been charging their members with the usual membership fees despite the closures and have refused to issue refunds, much to the gym members’ frustration.
Around 2,200 complaints have been filed to the Better Business Bureau for contrast disputes and billing issues at gyms and health and fitness centers.
Consumers are clamoring that it is illegal to refuse refunds at a time of a global pandemic where facilities are closed and/or fear of exposure in public spaces run high.

Membership Refunds During COVID-19
Members have expressed reluctance to pay for membership fees to their gyms amidst the COVID-19, citing that the reason they could not use their membership benefits was that the gyms have closed down because of the pandemic.
Consumers pointed out that gyms and fitness centers are “continuing to charge us monthly fees during the Pandemic shut down… making a profit of millions yet not paying employees nor allowing us entry.”
Gyms and fitness centers have taken automatic payments from accounts of members and have informed those who wanted refunds to go to the gym or fitness center to cancel their memberships or send a registered letter.
