Beovu Injections Cause Harmful Side Effects, Investigation Claims

Beovu, an injection used to treat wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD), is being scrutinized for potentially causing serious side effects affecting the eyes.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Beovu in October 2019 as an injectable treatment for wet AMD.

However, in June 2020, Beovu’s labeling was changed to add a warning that retinal vasculitis and/or retinal vascular occlusion can occur with the drug.

The concern arose of patients and doctors being unaware of these side effects which may have caused them to take or prescribe without knowing of the dangers.

More on the Beovu Vision Loss Allegations

Beovu is an FDA-approved injectable drug designed to treat wet AMD. It works by inhibiting the human vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the eyes, suppressing any abnormal growth of blood vessels under the macula which causes macular degeneration.

The most common side effects of Beovu include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Cataracts
  • Eye pain
  • Subconjunctival hemorrhages (broken blood vessels underneath the surface of the eye)
  • Vitreous “floaters” in the vision

… and other vision problems.

Eye-related complications have been associated with the use of Beovu, which includes:

  • Endophthalmitis
  • Increased intraocular pressure
  • Retinal detachment
  • Retinal vasculitis
  • Retinal vascular occlusion

… and more.

Many of these side effects carry the risk of permanent blindness and have been associated with other serious eye problems such as glaucoma, damage to the optic nerve, eye pain, redness, decreased vision, sensitivity to bright lights, blurry vision, visual floaters, and other visual distortions, visual disturbances, and loss of peripheral vision.

Novartis, the maker of Beovu has allegedly underreported the rates of ocular inflammation with Beovu in order to make the product appear to have a safety profile similar to its competitors.
