Keurig Agrees to Pay $31M to Settle Single-Serving Coffee Pods Class Action Lawsuits

$31 Million Keurig Class Action Settlement Proposed

After receiving allegations that Keurig monopolized the single-serve coffee pod market, the company resolved the lawsuits filed against them by paying $31 million.

This settlement will be given to consumers who Keurig K-Cup portion packs between September 2010 and August 2020. According to reports, this proposed settlement class can involve hundreds of thousands of consumers.

The settlement will benefit indirect buyers in preventing the risks of litigation through to a trial. This settlement also ensures affected consumers will get a payout.

“While Keurig is undoubtedly a large corporation and seemingly healthy, the presence and potential impact of the COVID-19 pandemic adds a layer of uncertainty and risk that could adversely affect the company’s financial footing,” the plaintiffs account in their motion.

An Easy Way Out

Since there are other lawsuits filed against Keurig, the plaintiffs deemed it wise to secure a deal since it’s a time-sensitive issue.

The plaintiffs also assert that the court should deem the settlement to be fair and “well within the range of reasonableness.”

“Although Keurig sold billions of Keurig K-Cup Portion Packs during the relevant period, the damages calculation is extremely complex,” they added.

“During the mediation, Keurig took the position that, after an assessment of risk, damages were de minimis and the value of the case was well below the settlement amount.”

The Keurig single-serve coffee class action lawsuits allege that the company routinely suppresses competition. Allegedly, Keurig made sure to be in control of the market. As a result, the company charged its indirect purchasers a higher price.

Despite the alleged wrongdoing, the proposed settlement will allow Keurig to escape the single-serve coffee pod class action lawsuits against them. Furthermore, this will not require the company to admit wrongdoing or facing potentially catastrophic damages.
