Capital One Bank To Allocate $190 Million In Settlement Agreement To Pay Millions Of Data Breach Victims
Banking company Capital One has promised to shell out $190 million as a class action settlement in order to pay its millions of clients who have fallen victims to a 2019 data breach incident.
Brandi Edmondson, et al. v. Capital One Financial Corporation, et al. Settlement
The Capital One Data Breach Settlement news stemmed from a case filed and led by complainant Brandi Edmondson. It argued that a massive data breach incident hit Capital One in 2019 that reportedly illegally exposed the personal data of tens of millions of individuals from the United States and Canada.
According to the complaint raised by Edmondson, as well as other plaintiffs named Gary Ziekicke, Brandon Hausauer, and Sara Sharp, sensitive personal and financial information of Capital One credit card applicants between the years 2005 and 2019 have been compromised in the data breach.
Per reports, the stolen data includes email addresses, Social Security details, bank account information, and many more.
It is believed that a lone worker from Amazon has exposed the treasure trove of information to the public. Their actions, according to sources, ended up undetected for months.
The class action argued that the data breach incident remained under the radar by both companies due to their inadequate security measures.
What Happens Next
By paying the settlement amount, Capital One and Amazon Web Services have been released from legal action accusing the two of negligence in handling customer information which led to the data breach incident.
Settlement proceedings are expected to roll over after the deal announcement. Up to this day, the defendants have denied any wrongdoing.
