Class Action Lawsuit Settlements of Great Value and Market Pantry Coffee
A consortium of coffee drinkers filed a class action lawsuit against a group of coffee manufacturers due to allegedly mislabeling each packet of their coffee.
Accusations Over Great Value and Market Pantry Coffee
Great Value, Market Pantry, and other related brands received lawsuits over alleged mislabeled coffee packets. According to the plaintiffs, the labels indicated that buyers could brew specific amounts of coffee in each packet, but the cup numbers were inflated.
As per the allegations, numerous brands created by the defendants were mislabeled regarding the number of cups of coffee that can be brewed in each packet.
The plaintiffs said that they relied on the products’ labels when they made their purchase decision. The class action lawsuit blamed the defendants for unjust enrichment, breach of warranty, violations of Missouri, California, and Florida consumer protection laws, and Uniform Commercial Code.
Settlements of Great Value and Market Pantry Coffee
On July 24, 2020, Massimo Zanetti Beverage USA, Mother Parkers Tea & Coffee USA, Ltd., and Reily Foods Company agreed to pay millions to consumers to close this Market Pantry Coffee Class Action Lawsuit, but they declined to accept any mistakes they made. An amount of $20 million was paid to consumers who were affected by this allegation.
The settlement agreement was acknowledged on July 29, 2020. In addition to the settlement agreements, the defendants agreed to revise their labeling practices. Also, they are changing their product packaging together with its print, graphic, online, and television ads.
A total of $30,000 and $4.5 million are included in the settlement agreement for the plaintiffs’ awards and attorneys fees and costs.
Claims of the Consumers on the Lawsuit
Consumers who purchased coffee packaged in vacuum bricks, cans, and jars from Great Value, Bonus Blend, Flavor Peak, Food Lion, Hannaford, Market Pantry, and Signature Select ground coffee between January 1, 2016, and July 29, 2020, are qualified to file claims for this lawsuit. On the other hand, people who bought coffee sold in bags are not qualified for the class action settlement.
The filing of these settlements was already done last November 2, 2020, and the final hearing for this lawsuit was done last November 16, 2020. In the end, consumers who filed settlements on this lawsuit received $5 each as of late April 2021.
